Rather than following the format of a traditional persuasive essay, Chloe has adapted the genre to create her own personal spin - a hybrid narrative/persuasive piece. Listen in on an imagined conversation between a married couple about to have their first child. You'll find all of the elements of a persuasive essay tucked into this creative format.
"I wonder if our baby is going to be a girl or a boy? I love surprises but it is so intimidating! Should we wait to find out whether our baby is a boy or girl? If we find out now, we can buy him or her all the needed baby stuff beforehand. This is such a hard decision! Honey, what do you think?"
"I think YES, we should find out if it's a boy or girl."
Knowing if your child is a boy or girl beforehand can make life so much easier. The parents can start getting clothes and other items for their baby, the parents will have months to think about a name to pick, and it will be a chance to plan and think about raising a girl or a boy.
Imagine a school with students wearing ripped up shirts and dusty old pants. They would look less like students than like werewolves! Other students are wearing raggedy old clothes. If you visited, would this seem like a good school to you? Students should definitely wear uniforms because schools would look more serious, it helps parents save their money, and it would be easy to tell which kids belong to a certain class on trips.
Would you like to know that your child is missing and not know where they were while they were gone? Kids, how about if your best friend was banned from play dates because they got an inappropriate game? All this could happen if children are allowed to go to a local video game store to buy video games by themselves.
I dragged my homework and quizzes home in my backpack. "I'm home," I say, plopping my stuff on the floor. I unzip my bag, take out my homework folder, and walk over to my desk to do my homework. Unfortunately, I can't find my homework pages. Of course this wouldn't be a problem if my homework was electronic on a computer!
Now come on, how about just buying a laptop or desktop computer for students? I believe that students should have a laptop for school because it would allow students to communicate electronically, they will have many ways to search and learn about the world word around them, and they can keep their grades private.
Have you ever thought to yourself "Should I be smoking cigarettes?" The answer is NO ... it's bad for you health, it causes pollution for our planet, and it's bad for people in your surroundings.
How would you like it if you were a girl and you chose to act like a boy and people made fun of you? Sexism is still alive today. For example, there is sexism in regards to clothes, sexism with jobs, and sexism with the toys available to children.
You rush home. You plop down on your bed. You take out your favorite fiction book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Then suddenly you remember your parents telling you fiction is a true waste of your time. You shake off that thought like a dog shaking off water. Then suddenly your mom's voice is ringing in your ears. "I know you're reading fiction; how many times do I have to tell you, fiction is a true waste of time!" Or is it, Mom? I strongly believe reading fiction is not a waste of time. I think this because fiction is fun, it builds big minds and imaginations, and it also is the perfect place to find juicy vocabulary and great story plots.
Did you see that kid bully another student? Kids don't have any social skills these days. This could be different if kids had more time to practice being social. In fact, kids need enough time to learn to get along. Let me give you ideas about why longer recess will make education better. It will convince you that longer recess will help, not hurt, kids' learning at school.
_You open a box of new Lego ... finding only pink and purple Legos. Oh no! Girl Lego? The Lego company is planning on coming out with a new set of Lego this month that are designed just for girls called Lego Friends. They will have different colors and minifigures than the regular Legos. I don't think girls should have their own Lego because Lego is particularly for boys, if girl Lego doesn't work it will be a waste of money for the company, and girls are not going to know that there is a Lego made for them.
