The Poetry Corner

In our class, we read and write poetry all year long. In fact, we try to bring a bit of poetry into all of our writing ... and into our lives! I carefully choose a Poem of the Week that I share with the students each week. The Poem of the Week usually connects with our learning in readers' workshop and writers' workshop. For example, when we study character descriptions in our workshops, we will also look at a poem that focused on character description. Each time we return to the week's poem, we notice new things that we can discuss and try out in our writing.
As part of our year-long poetry study, each student tries to publish at least one poem a month. We display our poetry on our interactive poetry display in the hallway outside of our classroom: Hooked on Poetry. Each student has a hook hanging along the wall with a name plaque above it. Whenever a student publishes a poem, we place the poem in a page protector and hang it from his/her hook with a binder ring. As the year progresses, each student will have a growing collection of their poetry on display.
