Info for Families about the Scholastic Book Club

The students in my class will have the option to purchase books with their families to add to their personal book collections through the Scholastic Book Club. The Scholastic Book Club (SBC) puts out monthly catalogs of fairly priced books that they feel will be of interest to students in our grades. While I make sure that every one of my students has access to thousands of interesting, worthwhile books in our classroom library, there is value, of course, in owning a selection of books. Book ownership teaches children about the importance of books, and a well stocked bookshelf at home helps to create an intellectual environment. Whether you choose to purchase books through the SBC is entirely up to you. I simply provide the option for families who want to participate. You are welcome to browse through the book catalogs, either with the paper catalogs I periodically send home or online, and to purchase as many or as few books as you wish. If you are interested, read on below where I explain some more details about purchasing books through the SBC.
Why does my child sometimes bring home several Scholastic Book Club catalogs? Why are several different catalogs listed online?
I have decided to provide you with several different catalogs to accommodate for the range of interests and levels in our class. For example, I will always send home the Lucky catalog, which is the second and third grade catalog. However, I will sometimes supplement this with the 4-5-6 catalog in case you are looking for a greater challenge or a book to read aloud to your child. If the choices from so many catalogs becomes overwhelming, I suggest you start with the Lucky catalogs, as those books will probably be closest to your child's level and interests.
Should I place my order online or with the paper catalogs? What's the difference?
Until recently, catalog ordering was the only option for SBC. For catalog ordering, your child brings home paper catalogs each month. You browse through the catalogs with your child, and if you are interested in ordering books, you mark your selection on the order form on the back of the catalog. You send the order form, along with payment, to school with your child, and I send in the order. The books are delivered to school.
Now, Scholastic has provided the option for families to place SBC orders online. When placing orders online, you can use a credit card for payment, so your child doesn't have to handle money. Our class also earns free books if you place an online order. Feel free to use whichever method of ordering you prefer.
How do I place an online order?
Sign up at www.Scholastic.com/bookclubs. On the parent page, click the "Don't have a User Name and Password?" link, then register for your own username and password. When prompted, enter our Class Activation Code: GML37. This code ensures that your order is sent to me. Select the books you'd like to order from the catalogs available online. You'll get to take advantage of online-only specials and discounts. Place your order online by the due date. Books will be delivered directly to our classroom, as always.
