September Poetry
"Where Poetry Hides"

For our first poems of the year, we worked on list poems about "where poetry hides."  We started by looking at a section from Naomi Shihab Nye's poem "Valentine for an Ernest Man."  The students discussed how poetry is all around us, if we look using our "poet's eyes."  The students then enjoyed experimenting with a mix of abstract and concrete ideas and thinking up surprising places where they could find poetry.  The students all realized that great poetry is in the gritty details, not just in vague "billboard topics."  You can read our poems below ...

Our September Poems

Amy

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
In deep petal flowers
In love and friendship
Poetry hides
In a warm feathery nest
In pink silver heels
Poetry hides
In a treasure chest
In glittery moonshine
Poetry hides
In a heart
Of mothers love
In red and pink roses.

Ariana

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in the closet,
at the very back
Poetry hides
in my sketchers,
race cars,
and at the very bottom
of sea shells
In computers
and in your brain
and in your heart…

Britney

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in the woods
where scariness
begins.
Poetry hides
at the beach,
where the water
builds waves
so deep.
Poetry hides
in the shower,
feeling clean.
Poetry hides
in the bank,
Cha Ching!

Carson

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in my fishes eyes.
Poetry hides
in subway
sandwiches.
Poetry hides
in the cool fall breeze.
Poetry hides
in the grass swaying
in a country breeze.
Poetry hides
in my family
And most of all
poetry hides
in Everything.

Christian

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in the trees in
Central Park and in
stapled fingers.
Poetry hides
in your imagination
and in your heart.
Poetry hides
in toy cars and in fascinating words.
Poetry hides
in dragons that
breathe fire.
Poetry hides
in magicians and
gargoyles.
Poetry hides
in people…

Danielle

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
In pillows - soft
Pie - steaming
Cake - chocolate
Jackets - warm
Sweaters - cuddly
Frosting - raspberry
And disappearing
Pencils…

Diego

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in a pencil
and in your friend
Poetry hides
in a wrapped
present and in a
picnic basket.
Poetry hides
in a star, also in
Your heart…

Ellen

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides in
your friends,
and in fudgy
cake.
Poetry hides in
my mom’s perfume
and chocolate
cookies.
Poetry hides in
horses and cats.
Poetry hides in
animal books
and in sea
creatures.
Poetry hides in
YOU!

George

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in muscles
and weights.
Poetry hides
under the water
and inside clocks.
Poetry hides
in frog toes
and in doorways.
Poetry hides
in Spiderman’s webs
and in my mom’s
lasagna.

Henry

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
In haunted souls and
The golden sun.
Poetry hides
In ancient treasure and
In frozen swords.
Poetry hides in
Ninjas and in pirates.
Poetry hides
In computers and
In my family…

Janiya

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
Behind the moon
And behind the moon
Stars shine.
Poetry hides
In the fresh tall
Natural grass.
Poetry hides
In candy
So sweet and sour.

Jayden

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in math and
PATH trains
home.
Poetry hides
in earth,
water pipes and
A.C.
on a steaming day.
Poetry hides
in curly hair,
warm coats,
and in
pencil shavings…

Joseph

Poetry Hides…
Poerty hides
in ice cream
(rainbow sherbet)
Poetry hides
in a jungle.
Poetry hides
in short things.

Raiden

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
at the museum
and in cookies,
(fresh baked of course)
Poetry hides
at the pond
and with red eyed
tree frogs.
Poetry hides
with Batman
and Robin.
Poetry hides
in my food
and with deer.

Thomeisha

Poetry Hides…
Poetry hides
in party dresses
and gold treasure
Poetry hides
in sparkling lights
and in big clocks
Poetry hides
in Christmas lights
in soap spots
Poetry hides
in earrings
and in lunch boxes
in water
in hands and sneakers
in cups
and in numbers…
