Valentine's Day Graphing
When Valentine's Day approaches, and my students are preoccupied with hearts and candy, I bring out this activity to work in some math. I originally got the idea from my friend Lindsay, who undoubtedly got the idea from others before her. I pass out a small box of candy hearts per student. The students sort the hearts by color, and then create a tally chart (frequency table) with their data. They then create a bar graph on graph paper, and a pictograph using a template I provide. Finally, they write number stories (word problems,) that their friends can solve using the data in their graphs. I've attached the tally chart and pictograph form below.
