Literacy Links and Technology

Picture
Do you want to read an "e-book" on the computer?  Are you looking for a fun word study game?  How about listening to an audiobook?  If so, you've come to the right place!  Below on this webpage are websites that we will use at school, and that you may want to use at home to practice your reading, spelling, vocabulary, and writing skills.  I am going to continue adding links as the year progresses, so please check back for more websites.

Click here for more information on the iPods in our classroom.

Keyboarding (Typing) Websites

Reference and Research Websites

World Book For Kids - A web-based encyclopedia and much more.  This has various encyclopedia articles, a dictionary, an atlas, as well as game, science projects, and activities.  You can also access Worldbook Student (middle school,) and World Book Advanced (high school/college.)
You need to use a login and password to access this site.  Login: district75 Password: worldbook

Word Study Websites

Word Wizards - Practice the "Making Words" word study activity online with this great website.  You can make words based on the words from four popular picture books.  Can you guess the mystery word?  This website reinforces the Making Words activities that we do in our class.

Scrabble Word Scrambles - A challenging game for more advanced spellers.  Unscramble the letter tiles to make a word.  Earn points for each word you unravel.

Audiobook and Book Movie Websites

Storyline Online - This is an online video website where famous actors read dozens of picture books aloud to you!  Click on the book title you want to hear, put on a pair of headphones, and read along with these wonderful picture books.  Notice how much expression these actors and actresses use when they read.  Can you sound like them when you read?

Online Storytime Studio by Barnes and Noble - Watch video versions of several favorite picture books, read by the authors or other famous people.  These are also great examples of fluent, expressive reading.  (I don't think these movies will play in the safari web browser, but it seems to work fine using firefox.)

Speekaboos - This is a subscription (paid) website, however they also have many free read-along books that you can watch in the "Stories" section of the website. Many of these stories are read by famous tv and movie stars - can you guess who from their voices?
