Reading and Writing Reviews

Picture
We are going to be learning about the genre of book reviews.  We will be reading all sorts of book reviews and deciding what makes a helpful review, versus an unhelpful review.  We'll also be looking at other types of reviews: movie reviews, food reviews, etc.  Finally, you'll get to write your own reviews to share with the class.  So, get ready to be opinionated!

Book Reviews:

Good Reads - People write in their own opinions about books.  Do you agree or disagree with the reviewers?

The Children's Book Review - This website has reviews of thousands of children's books. (http://www.thechildrensbookreview.com/)

Through the Looking Glass -This is a book review magazine that also publishes some of their reviews online.  These reviews tend to be longer and are very professional.

Reader Views Kids - This site has lots of published book reviews written by kids like you!

Scholastic's Share What You're Reading - On this website, you can both read and write book reviews.  Search by genre and see what other kids have to say about books you have read or think you might want to read.  Later on, you can submit a book review that you write to be posted on this website!

Movie Reviews:

Common Sense Media - This website has movie reviews of kids' and family movies.  It was created to help parents decide which movies are appropriate for their children, but the reviews are also interesting to read to find out if a movie will be entertaining - or not.

Rotten Tomatoes - This is a fun website that compiles movie reviews from lots of different newspapers and websites, and combines all of those opinions to give a movie a "score."  Note that this is a website meant for adults, and some of the movies reviewed are NOT appropriate for children.  Please be responsible and only look at movie reviews for children's movies that are rated PG.
