Supermarket Math, 10/14/10
Here's what the students had to say ...
"Today we went to the MET supermarket so we can buy stuff for our party. We had a budget and it was $25.00 to spend. We did subtraction, we talked about prices, we did rounding and ESTIMATED! When we went over our budget we took one thing out which was the sprinkles. But then the supermarket let us have the sprinkles for … FREE." ~ Cynari
"First we made our budget. It was $25.00. Then we went to the MET store. We were looking for ice cream, sprinkles, cups, spoons, and cones. We added the prices of each item. We subtracted the sum from $25.00. Then cashier gave us the difference as the change. Then we went back to our classroom and enjoyed our “Float Party.” ~ Lara
"Today my teacher, my friends, and me had a “Float Party.” We went to a supermarket. We learned about prices and costs using subtraction and addition. Our teacher said the store was going to trick us. If something is $4.99 it will be like $5.00 but people think it is $4. The store wanted to get more money. After we buy the ice cream and the other stuff, we enjoyed them." ~ Joseph
"We were having a party. We needed to buy things. So we went to a supermarket. When was came back, we ate ice cream. We did addition. Our budget was $25.00. It cost $25.22. The change was 3 cents. The prices were over our budget but the manager was nice." ~ Alvin
"Today we went to the MET shop and the budget was $25.00. We used subtraction to buy our stuff. When we went to the cash register when we paid we did not have enough money to buy everything, so the woman took off the tax. Then Ms. P gave a quarter and the woman gave 3¢ change. Then we went back to school to have the “Float Party”!" ~ Julia
"When we went to the market our budget was $25.00. Almost all of the prices end with 9¢ or 99¢. We used subtraction to tell how much money we had left. After we got the items we bought them. We did not have enough money but the worker was so nice that she lowered the tax. The sprinkles were free because she brought them to school. We have so much fun!" ~ Jon
"When my class and I went to the MET supermarket we were estimating with money. Our class budget was $25.00. If something cost $4.49 we would estimate and round it to $4.50. If it was $9.99 we would estimate it to ten dollars a piece. Of course we rounded the money. We also used addition and subtraction. The most important thing we did was figure out how much money we could spend." ~ Benjamin
"My friends and I went to the grocery store with a budget $25.00. We had a list of things that we were going to buy but it turned out that we couldn’t buy everything. The tax didn’t say we had enough but they let us have everything because it was $25.62. And we forgot our sprinkles and the lady ran back and gave it to us when we were lining up to go inside. I used addition and subtraction to estimate how much we had. We didn’t have exact change. It cost too much." ~ Leo
"Today we went to the MET Supermarket. We were having a float jar party. The food cost a lot of money. And Mrs. Zimmerman gave me $25 for today’s budget. The price for 4 boxes of ice cream was $10. We still had 15 dollars left to buy things. We used $10 already. We used the $15 to buy sprinkles, gummies, and marshmallows. Then we went to pay the money. The cashier gave us back 3 pennies. When we got back to our school we ate the yummy sundaes. I used a bowl to eat the sundae. During this trip I used subtraction and addition. I paid the cashier $25.00. Ms. Pomponio paid 25¢. In total we paid the cashier $25.25. Then the cashier gave us the difference 3 pennies for change. Totally today we cost $25.22 to buy food. This was a fun trip." ~ Junhao
"I appreciate that woman named Amy because she remember to give us the item that we needed to make our ice cream sundaes. I also like when we ate the ice cream. We also did math at the store. The price was a little bit more money. We did not have exact change with 25¢." ~ Brendan
"We used change to buy the food. We rounded to know how much it all cost. We did addition and subtraction too. We went to the supermarket to do math. The people in the supermarket let us have the sprinkles free. We got lots of stuff. The sprinkles had no price tag. That is why we got it free. We have $25.00 for our budget. We looked at the prices to see if it was too much." ~ Rowan
"We used mental math to estimate everything we wanted to buy. When we came to the counter, we got to look at the computer to see how much it cost. Our budget was $25.00. It cost more than $25.00 and they were so kind that they subtracted the tax off and that they gave us the sprinkles for free." ~ Linnea
"At the supermarket we did a lot of addition. Everything cost $25.22. That is how much it was. The cashier lowered the price so it was not too much. That was very kind." ~ Alijah
"We went to buy sweets at MET. We learned about money. We learned different prices. We even bought different things like gummy bears and ice cream. I don’t remember how much they cost. We also got different things from the store like cherries and cones and spoons. We estimated a lot of money." ~ Polina
"It was awesome shopping at the market. I loved it. We went to the market to buy stuff for our party. The ice cream was 2 for $5.00. I loved the party and mostly the ice cream." ~ Keo
"We went to the MET supermarket. We had a budget and the budget was $25 but we went over our budget by 50¢ and we also got sprinkles donated. We did rounding to add and compare all of the food prices that we bought together not including the sprinkles. But we estimated everything else." ~ George
"We reached the top of our Float Jar. So, we decided to have an ice cream party. We went to the MET supermarket with a list. Our budget is $25.00. To find out what we could buy we estimated the price of everything by rounding. But when we added up all the things we needed, there was a few more cents and dollars to pay. But they were so kind and didn’t make us pay our taxes. And Ms. Pomponio gave the cashier a quarter. But with all that money, we still couldn’t buy sprinkles, so we had to leave it out. But when we were going back to school, the cashier followed us and gave us the sprinkles for free! We then said a BIG thank you and went back to our school and had the ice cream party!!!" ~ Catherine
"Our budget was $25.00. We were able to buy everything we needed because we did not have to pay tax and we got the sprinkles for free. We had to look at the prices to make sure that we had enough money." ~ Colin
