Book Browsing: Shop & Tell

New books are published every month, and eager readers love checking out book reviews to find great new books to read. You can help us find exciting new books to add to our classroom library collection! Begin by browsing some of the book review websites listed below. If you find a book that interests you, Google the title and author to find out more about the book. Often books have their own websites or the publisher will have a webpage with information about the book. Sometimes you can even read some sample pages of a book through an online bookstore.
If you find a book that you want to suggest as an addition to our classroom library, fill out the Shop & Tell Book Request Form below or ask for a paper form in class. Each month, Mrs. Zimmerman will choose several new books to buy for our classroom library. Will one of your suggestions be picked? It all depends on how thoroughly you research your book suggestion and how convincing you are on your form. Happy hunting!

Websites to Learn about New Books
Many of these websites were written for adult book buyers - teachers, parents, and librarians. You can still read and use these reviews, but keep in mind that the reviews are geared for adults buying books for kids.
Watch, Connect, Read - Mr. Schu is a superstar school librarian who read 2,011 books in 2011, and is planning to read 2,012 book in 2012! That's some reading super-power, all right! Mr. Schu loves helping kids find great books to read, and he uses his blog to write about new children's books that he recommends. His website is FULL of videos - that is how he presents his reviews - so be patient, it can take a long time to load, but it's worth it.
Dog Eared - A Reader's Best Friend - This is a blog with book reviews by KIDS! It is published by National Geographic Kids, and they review 5-10 books a month. It's great to hear another kid's opinion on new books.
Ink Splot 26 Reads - This blog at the Scholastic STACKS website posts short and juicy book reviews as well as author interviews, book contests, first chapters to read, and more. In their Books and Authors section, you can learn about even more new books by visiting the books' webpages.
Books for Kids Blog - Another children's librarian writes book reviews about new kid's books. This librarian is writing her reviews for kids, though, which may make them a bit easier to read. She writes about more picture books than chapter books, but if you go through the month-by-month directory on the left, you'll find plenty of chapter book reviews too.
A Year of Reading - This is a website by two teachers, Franki and Mary Lee, who write about books and reading every single day! Every Friday they post a poem instead of a book review. When you click on the titles of the books they list, it will take you to Amazon where you can read more reviews or possibly view a part of the book.
Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Reviews - Go to the Current Issue tab or the Library of Reviews and choose the section that interests you. (Fiction reviews? Graphic novels? Series of the month?) Then click on "read the review" to read the full reviews.
