Main Idea Internet Activity Center
Did you know that you can practice finding the main idea of texts on the Internet? Listed here are -- websites that I want you to visit while you are at the computer center. Please visit these websites in order, and make sure that you complete the activities at each website before you go to the next site. Each link below will open in a new window. When you are done with a website, close out of that page and come back to this webpage. Have fun reviewing main idea, supporting details, and topic sentences!
1) Learning Upgrade Main Idea Course --- Go to this website and look for the button on the right that says "47 - Main Idea." Click on that button and listen to the song about main idea. Then go through the activity, answering all of the main idea questions. How many points did you score?
2) "What's The Big Idea" Game Show --- Click on this link to play in this main idea "game show." You pick which passages to read and then figure out the main idea. Each time you answer correctly, you'll get to turn over letters to answer a tricky riddle!
3) Main Idea Quizzy --- Read each passage and try to answer to questions correctly. Can you get a perfect "16" score?
4) Reading Skills Rocket Main Idea Challenge --- This is a challenging website. In some of the paragraphs, the main idea isn't included in a topic sentence. You have to be an expert main idea detective to figure out these out. Good luck!
5) EXTRA CREDIT! Read the article about "Super Vegetables" by clicking on the link. Read the article very carefully and think about the main idea of the entire article. When you think you know exactly what the main idea is, go to the "Contact Mrs. Zimmerman" section of our class website. Type in your name. Do not type in an email address. Where it says "Comments" write down what the main idea of the article is. Write at least one complete sentence stating the main idea. Then click the "submit" button. I will get your answer in my email, and if it is correct, I will post your name here on the website as a Main Idea Expert.
