Lego for Girls? By Jake

_You open a box of new Lego ... finding only pink and purple Legos. Oh no! Girl Lego? The Lego company is planning on coming out with a new set of Lego this month that are designed just for girls called Lego Friends. They will have different colors and minifigures than the regular Legos. I don't think girls should have their own Lego because Lego is particularly for boys, if girl Lego doesn't work it will be a waste of money for the company, and girls are not going to know that there is a Lego made for them.

Picture
Lego Friends minifig and Classic minifig.
_One reason that girls shouldn't have their own Lego brand is that Lego is particularly for boys is because there are Ninjago Legos and Star Wars Legos, which are collections that most boys like. Boys will concentrate for a long time on Legos and it is a popular hobby for boys. Finally, the design of Legos isn't really for girls.

Another reason that girls shouldn't have their own Legos is if Lego Friends doesn't get popular, it will be a waste of money for the Lego company because they are spending millions of dollars to make those Legos. An article about Lego Friends said that they are making a whole new collection of minifigures just for girls, and this wastes a lot of money. The company may not have enough money later on to make any more Lego for boys!

Lastly, girls should not have their own Legos brand because how will girls even know that there are Legos just for them? Girls don't usually get Lego magazines which is how we learn about new Legos. They won't get catalogs either because they are not signed up and how would the Lego people know where the girls live? The last reason is that girls barely even go into Lego stores. How would the girls get the news if they're not there?

In conclusion, I don't think girls should have Lego because Lego is really for boys, if the idea doesn't work it will be a big waste of the company's money, and the girls won't even know that there are Lego for them. If you know the people who make Lego, let them know my point of view! It may work and stop this craziness.

Having two boys, I am very familiar with Legos. I have been told that they are great learning toys because kids can build all kinds of things with them, expanding their imaginations and teaching them to solve structural problems. I think girls would benefit from this kind of play. And if it takes special characters to get them jazzed about it, so be it. But think how wonderful it would be if both boys and girls were more encouraged to play with Legos, then they would have more reason to play together...and that could be good as well.

Nice blog, but I disagree with you,Jake. Legos are for anyone. It will be not fair to girls but I didn't mean you are wrong. I just mean I agree with Chloe.

Dear Jacob,
I disagree because if girls get legos the lego company gets to have more fun making goo.So if you go ask your sister to go away and she dosen't go take out a box of lego friends put them in her room and your sister will go play with the leo friends.I don't think your wrong or anything I just disagree Now are you convinced Jacob.
Love,
Leo

As a mom to both a girl and two boys, I do think Legos are a good toy for both. I don't think that just changing the colors of Legos makes them more boy or girl oriented. While it is true that some girls and boys play with the same toys differently, sometimes they don't. Each child is different, whether they are a boy or a girl is only one reason why. There are some advantages to specific Lego sets (i.e. Ninjago or Friends), but I think the best Legos are just building blocks which leave the game to the imagination.

i agree. girls shouldn't have a legos for them because the lego creators already created star wars legos and ninjago legos and those are for boys.

Jake, I disagree, first as a "girl," because I LOVE building with Lego; and second as a parent of both a girl and a boy, because now that India has "girl" Legos, she has enjoyed playing with the new characters. It is true that my daughter is more interested in the social aspect of the newly designed Legos, but she also spent time building the house for the characters to play in and that helps her develop better visual spacial skills. It is not true that she doesn't have the same attention span as you, my son, she just prefers to spend the majority of her play creating stories around the characters, as opposed to you, who prefers to spend more time designing and building structures or monsters.
