The whistle blows. I slowly get in line and wait for my teacher. Everyone groans when we walk into the school building. We try to hide our bored faces. We trudge up to our classroom. "One third of American children don't even get any recess," I tell my friends quietly so I don't get caught by the teacher talking in the hallway. I feel sad deep inside for those kids. I wonder, "Why does recess have to be so short?" My head feels like it is going to explode. I guess you can tell, I think recess should be much longer!
Children need more recess because they need to be more physical. Being physical is important, because otherwise they will get very out of shape. Recess is really their only chance to be physical. Moreover, with only one period for recess and lunch, this means less than a half an hour of physical activity per day. During the rest of the school day, a kid can't be physical because they have other work to do, and then when they go home they have to do homework too. Most parents wrongly think that being physical is less important than being educated, but I really think being physical is equally as important. If you aren't in shape, you can have serious health problems. With gym only once or twice a week, kids need more exercise than that to be healthy.
Secondly, I feel kids need more recess because they will become bored and distracted in class if they do not have enough recess. They will have a harder time paying attention to people like teachers. If you're a teacher, wouldn't you want your students to pay close attention? If so, then give your students more recess. Otherwise you will be frustrated when your students are distracted and staring out the window dreaming about recess. They won't know the answers when you ask them questions, all because they don't get enough recess. Kids who don't have a lot of recess often whisper more and get chatty during the day. This can spread from student to student! Kids who don't get their energy out at recess will be moving a lot in class, which gets annoying. That bothers everyone around the antsy student. The solution? More recess!
Lastly, recess is the only time of the day when kids get fresh air. Every other period is inside the school building. Come visit, I don't think you'll like the school's air. Fresh air will help keep kids healthy and prevent germs from spreading. Kids also have so much fun in fresh air and adore going outside to play.
In conclusion, when the end of recess whistle blows, kids' fun is ruined until tomorrow. And tomorrow is a long time away! Please give us more recess!
