Big news reporting live from class 344, Today class 344  got new  African clawed frogs. African clawed frogs are frogs that are see through and have  golden hearts and if you take a step their heart will thump.  If you make it look like it's raining it will grow faster and look not so see through. So if you see an African clawed frog call us and we'll help! Thanks for listening to Loria's and India's News For New York!

My Life with 5 New Friends by Ivory

My life with new tadpole friends has been great. I say good morning to them and good-bye, and I never had a class pet before, well I had a class pet in Pre-k but it was a fish. :-(  And for some other people, they had much cooler class pets, so it's nice having a pet that will change over time, and other animals just get bigger. So, tadpoles, have fun living!

My Tadpole Observations By Chloe

Hi I am Chloe and I will be talking about what I observe and what might happen in the future when the toads grow up.

I noticed that 1 or 2 tadpoles are usually awake and the rest of them are sleeping.  The tadpoles are scared of really loud noises..........So they better get used to us!  I wonder why the tadpoles when they are scared they only go into a corner and not behind the plant that we put in their habitat. I think now that we got tadpoles/ Toads I think we just saved 5 more until we set them into New York City, then its not our fault if they die. Maybe when the toads grow up the toads will play hide and go ribbit!   When we first got the tadpoles I saw one of there tongues. I also saw one of the tadpoles eyes it was really freaky it looked like a squeaky toy with eyes popping out.......No offence Tadpoles. Maybe when the toads grow up they will be great dancers.......They could do tap or hip hop?

Caring for our Tadpoles by Eli & Vikram

Our tadpoles' water smelled  very bad so we cleaned their water. First we removed the cap from the tank. Second we took out the dirty water with a cup. Vikram scooped out three cups full of dirty water. Then we put in clean water. (Harrison did that part.) Then we put a little food for the tadpoles to eat. (Eli did the feeding.) Finally we put the cap back on. That is how we changed the water.

Bufo americanas by Harrison

The American toad advances from a toadlet/tadpole to grown up toad in a time of 50 to 65 days. After the metamorphasis is complete they stay in the water until they are mostly land based. They have a relationship to chlorognium alga witch makes them grow way faster then normal standards.tadpoles produce toxic chemicals in their skin that discourages some preditors. Also skin colors can change depending on the humitity in the area. Their breeding habits are very similar to anaxyras fowleri.

The Story Of Our Class Pet, Part 2 by Bubby

We were pretty  excited but confused at the same time, but then Mrs. Zimmerman said we were going to get the African Clawed Frog in a week. After art we set up the tank with a little plant in the middle. The hardest part was getting them in. Those fast little miscreats kept escaping the net! We finally caught them and put them in the tank . SO TINY!!!!!!!! I made a sign that said: Hi! We're new here and a bit confused and scared. WARNING please do not tap on glass

Tips from Mrs. Z. about Commenting on a Blog

4/24/2014

Hi scholars! One of the great things about writing a blog is getting comments, but it's important to make sure that your comments are always appropriate and safe! Here are some tips to do your best blog commenting ...
  • When you write on the blog, use your first name only.  You may use your last initial but should never use your full name.
  • Do not post your address, phone number, or email address on the blog.
  • Never post comments that may hurt someone’s feelings or offend someone.
  • Remember that blogging is about reading, thinking, and responding.

And about the style and quality of your writing:
  • Your comment should be on topic!  If the post talks about Chris van Allsburg, please don’t write about how delicious chocolate is.  We all agree that chocolate is delicious but that is not an appropriate place for that discussion.  Please talk about Chris van Allsburg.  If you have a story you’d like to tell everyone about, please write it in the “SHARE” section.
  • You should write in complete sentences.  You shouldn’t be saying things like “Hi guys!  Bye!”  Please write sentences such as “I think omnivore is a great animal word because it is a type of animal that eats both meat and vegetables.”
  • Please use proper spelling, punctuation, and grammar.  Remember that you only need one exclamation mark.  You will get your point across when you say, “You did an amazing job!”  You DO NOT need to say “You did an amazing job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”  You would not do this on your writing in class, please do not write it this way on the blog.

The American Toad (Natalia)

4/24/2014

The American Toad's original habitat is just some leafy stuff in a busy place like New York City. There are most likely some in Central Park.  As tadpoles, American toads are herbivores, but when they are adults, they become carnivorous. An American toad's diet is pretty large, but not when they are babies.  They eat leaves, crushed or whole.  An adult eats flies, crickets, slugs, spiders, and more!  If you are going to take care of tadpoles, you only use spring water for them.  When you wash the tank, you cant use soap or tap water under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. You will get them sick and they will die that day. Anyway, an American toad's life cycle is pretty simple. First there is the egg, then the tadpoles, and finally a full grown American toad.  The tadpoles are very very tiny, an adult can fit about thirty tadpoles in their palm! When the tadpoles are newborn, they are blind. The tadpoles are black with a reddish brown stitch down their stomach. The tadpoles usually have gravel in their tank, and they play dead when they are scared.  (This is based on my observations today, and my research!) When tadpoles are born, they are on their own. Parents don't care for their babies at all, just giving birth is their job.  Have fun with your tadpoles!!!!!!!!!!

The Story of our Class Toads, Part 1 (Isabela & Yana)

4/24/2014

It all started when Mrs. Zimmerman told us we might get a class frog. If we persuaded her to get some tadpoles. If we did not persuade her then we would not get tadpoles.  We were so excited but we were going to use our most persuasive writing yet! We researched and prepared for our best persuasion yet! After 45 minutes straight of writing our letters, we were so confident that Mrs. Zimmerman would want a frog or not. Most of us wanted a class pet and only some of us  didn`t want one. The next day Mrs. Zimmerman`s decision was on the board. But we were not getting a class frog , specifically an African Clawed Frog , instead we were getting an American toad. The scientific form of the American Toad is" Bufo Americana"
